In the short story Identities the title and the use of contrast and irony contribute to the theme of the story. The title contributes to the overall theme of the story because the theme is miss-identification yet the title is identities. This is foreshadowing that identities will play a major roll in the story. W.D. valgardson (the author) shows elements of contrast in the story. For example, the setting contrasts as the story goes on because at the start of the book he starts off in his beautiful neighborhood, but as he ventures out of his house he slowly notices that the neighborhood is getting exceedingly poorer and poorer. This is supported by when in the book the author says " wakes him a desire to temporarily abandon the neat yards and 100 year old oaks" ,then contrasts too, " ahead there is a store with windows in hand painted signs and vertical bars" implying he is in a part of town where crime is an issue; unlike his part of town where they left food stands unattended with food out. Valgardson also uses irony through out the story like when he sees the police officer and he thinks he's safe from the men he deemed to be criminals outside of the store, but to his dismay the officer (symbol of safety and security) is the one who kills him. That is how the use of contrast and irony help contribute to the theme of the story.
